Indian Oils Hills
Kananaskis, Alberta
November 8, 2003
Distance: 7.9 km (4.9 mi)
Cumulative Elevation Gain: 613 m (2011 ft)
Two weeks ago we climbed Bluerock Mountain, but since then the area had been hit with snow. A much less ambitious trip was in order. We hiked the Indian Oils trail although instead simply hiking out and back, we performed a counterclockwise loop. We climbed four of the six hills, although we didn't include the highest hill which is the hill farthest west.
We first hiked offtrail up a ridge east of trail. Being mostly open, the ridge provided the best scenery. After that, we made our way to the trail and followed it back to the road.
We had clear skies but lots of snow
From a high point we reached, Bluerock Mountain dominates the view northeast
The cold, dark shadows contrast with the sunlit slopes
The fresh snow offered little resistance
Although the hills are treed, there are plenty of openings to take in the view
