Moose Mountain
Kananaskis, Alberta
May 23, 2010
Distance: 14.1 km
Cumulative Elevation Gain: 812 m
It's been over ten years since I've been to Moose Mountain, and even then I mountain biked it. This time I went on foot with Dinah, who had never been there.
No doubt the fire road helps make this peak popular, a no-nonsense route impossible to get lost on. The road follows the southeast ridge before veering onto the east ridge. Aside from a dip in the road, the last two kilometres are the steepest part of the ascent.
But we found the first section of road monotonous. Flanked by trees, there was nothing to see. But once we passed the treeline, we appreciated the far-ranging views as we crossed the broad slopes and headed to the lookout that tops Moose Mountain.
We were, however, surprised at the amount of snow on the mountain. But the snow didn't stop other hikers we saw along the way, including some who hiked to the top in running shoes!
